Lube 101

First, let’s start this post off with a challenge - if you are not currently using lube in your solo or partnered play - we dare you to try. This blissful little addition to your sex life can completely change sensations and reduce the chances of discomfort or even (gasp) condom breakage.

This post will outline the various types of lubrication and what they’re used best for. Like most things, there are always pros and cons of the different ingredients based on the use and who is using it (anyone else have sensitive skin?). The bottom line is there are many amazing products, and some products that may be worth avoiding (most drug store products have all sorts of ingredients that could aggravate your skin or even cause infection).

Ingredients to watch for: Glycerine, parabens, and fragrances. These can cause irritation and infection in the vagina. If you are prone to yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, or irritation, avoid products with these ingredients.

Types of lube

Water Based Lubricant: As you may have guessed, the main ingredient in water-based lubricants is water - this means the lubricant will ultimately evaporate/absorb into the skin and is generally less irritating to our sensitive areas. Folks with vaginas may prefer to use a water-based lube, as they’re less likely to upset your pH balance. In addition, water-based lubricants are compatible with all sex toys, barriers (etc) and won’t stain or damage your clothes, sheets and play things.
Pros: compatible with all sex toys & barriers, won’t stain, not likely to cause irritation
Cons: Because it evaporates, water-based lube might not be good for longer play or it could require frequent application

Silicone Based Lubricant: Silicone based lube feels silky smooth on your skin and lasts for ages. Because the main ingredient is silicone, these lubricants are not safe to use with silicone toys as it will break down the material over time, but they’re safe to use with latex. Silicone lubricant is great for water play since it doesn’t wash away easily with water and lasts for a long time, great for use as massage oil and is generally scentless and tasteless. Silicone in itself is a hypoallergenic but be aware of other ingredients as they may cause irritation. Silicone lube may leave stains on fabric.
Pros: Long lasting, great for water-play, great multi-use lube.
Cons: Not safe for use with silicone toys, may stain clothing and sheets, could cause irritation.

Hybrid Lubricant: Hybrid lube is really aims to be the best of both worlds. They are mainly water-based with a small amount of silicone that allows them the same versatility of a water-based lubricant (read: you can use this with all of your favourite silicone toys). This lube lasts longer (like silicone or oil based lubes) but because it’s mostly water-based, it is gentle and less likely to cause irritation or infection for those with vaginas.
Pros: All the water-based pros + silicone safe and long lasting!
Cons: We will let you know if we think of one!

Oil Based Lubricant: Think coconut oil, hand lotion, etc. SO - these lubricants are the gift that keeps on giving - BUT, come with a lot of baggage. Primarily, oil-based lubricants are NOT safe with latex barriers and birth control. Secondly, oil-based lube (because it sticks around and is not easily washed off the skin) is more likely to cause skin irritation and infection. Finally, they will stain fabrics (sheets/clothes, etc). You might be thinking - what exactly can I use this lube for? Well, it works great for massages, or as lube for a handy on a penis. Other than that - be careful.
Pros: Lasts for ages.
Cons: Not safe with latex, will cause irritation, will stain fabrics.

From watery to gel to creamy: what to choose? This is largely a personal preference, but it can be good to consider when selecting lube for various kinds of play. For example, since the anus is not self-lubricating (like a vagina), you will want to ensure you have a thicker, longer last lube to accompany anal play. (hybrid lubricant is recommended if you’re using a silicone toy). Our advice is to play around and find what works for you and your body. Everyone enjoys different sensations and textures - just remember which lubes are safe with your barriers and toy materials!
